Pregnancy related problems are very common in the new generation, because of our changing life styles and food habits.

Most of the common musculoskeletal pains are:

  • Thoracic pain
  • Low back pain
  • Tenderness and muscle spasm may present over muscles along the spine, gluteal region thigh and calf muscles
  • Posterior pelvic pain - It is a deep pain felt below and to the side at the waistline, and/or below the waistline on either side across the tailbone (sacrum)
  • Sacro-Iliac joint pain / Pelvic girdle pain
  • Pubic symphysis pain
  • Coccydynia
  • Sciatica
  • Knee pain
  • Wrist pain

Causes of Musculoskeletal pains

Muscle spasms and trigger point formations: Women those who lead sedentary lifestyles and desktop jobs may have aggravating muscle spasm and trigger points leading to severe unbearable pain. Further they get worsened during pregnancy period due to physiological and anatomical changes. Pregnancy diverts circulation from other areas to share increased oxygen with the baby. Thus muscles get less oxygen than its normal consumption. People those who does constant sitting or standing job need lot of blood circulation and oxygen to their antigravity muscles ( back muscles and some of the leg muscles) to keep them active and to prevent fatigue. Sudden diversion of blood circulation not only fatigues the muscles, but also can contribute to trigger point formation and spasm. This trigger points and spasm can generate terrible back pain, sciatica and some time make person immobile.

Postural Change: Increased size of abdomen of a pregnant woman completely changes the posture of body. The extra added weight and increased size of the abdomen shifts the center of gravity forward and thus pulls lower back forward and stretches out and weakens abdominal muscles and at the same time shortens and strengthens the back muscles . This change put huge stress on the lower spine and especially on ligaments, discs at the lower back and the lower back muscles and pelvic and knee joint.

Weight Gain: Excessive weight gain can cause many problems. The increased weight over altered posture creates lot of stress on musculo-skeletal systems and joints. Increased muscle mass some times creates continuous pull on origin points or its insertion points. For example, pain over the tail bone (Coccydynia)

Hormonal changes: During pregnancy many hormonal changes takes place. Relaxin is one of the hormone that loosen up joints and the ligaments that attach pelvic bones to spine and vertebras to vertebras and around other joints. This can make less stable and cause pain while activities. The coccyx is normally immobile, but during pregnancy it is free to move and allowing passage of the baby during birth which makes it highly vulnerable for problem resulting in coccyx pain.
